question of the day

Will there be soloists in heaven?

  1. That's a good question. It might make things more interesting to have a soloist every once in a while. Or at least a quartet.

  2. Absolutely. But everyone with the desire will have the opportunity to communicate their own feelings/testimony in that way.

At least I hope so... because it wouldn't be heaven to me if there weren't an opportunity for solitary performance/singing... I love choir too, but there's something different/special about bearing one's individual testimony through music, and listening to others (individually) bear theirs as well.

  3. Will there be soloists in heaven? I don't see any reason to keep them out just for that.

  4. Will there be individuals in heaven acting as such? Are you implying that because in a Gospel context so much emphasis is placed on being part of the group, giving yourself to Zion, that this is the way of every aspect of heaven?

This is not in a musical context, but Christ, himself, submitted Himself fully to the will of His Father and did nothing of Himself. Do we not nevertheless think of Him as an individual of great identity? He said if we lose ourselves we will find ourselves and I believe that if we pass through the purposes of our probation here we shall find that to be true. And musically true, too.

  5. As a musician, I ask myself why I play solos. Little solos within the orchestra, as a soloist in a concerto... in church. I always try to play my best, to try and reach people (making them cry during oboe-esque parts is the best!). Will there be solos in Heaven? I guess it all has to do with the intent of the performer. If my goal is to affect the listener (to bring the spirit, or for whatever reason, really), is that bringing glory to myself?

  6. I say yes. Talent is something to be viewed as a gift and a blessing. And must be shared in order to bless the performer as well as the audience.

  7. What is a solo but something an individual expresses to others? Will we speak our own words to others in conversation? Music is a wonderful way to communicate because it is a joint conversation between all of the players, speaking at the same time, or in groups, or alone as part of a greater whole. In heaven, will words and conversation expand to the capabilities music gives us today?
